# Veterans Day 2026: How to Honor Veterans Beyond “Thank You”

Published by [Shannon Walker](https://blog.northwestbattlebuddies.org/blog/author/shannon-walker) on Oct 21, 2026, 9:00:00 AM

### **Key Takeaways**

- Veterans Day 2026 falls on **Wednesday, November 11**. It’s a federal holiday honoring everyone who has served in the U.S. Armed Forces, living and deceased.
- November 11 marks the anniversary of the 1918 armistice that ended World War I. The holiday was known as Armistice Day until Congress renamed it in 1954.
- "Thank you for your service" matters, but lasting support comes from action that reaches Veterans throughout the year.
- **[Northwest Battle Buddies](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/about/about-nwbb)**provides professionally trained PTSD service dogs to Veterans at no cost, helping them regain their freedom and independence.
- You can honor Veterans this November 11 by[**giving monthly through Operation Never Quit**](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/onq)**,[joining Pledge-A-Pup](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/pledge-a-pup),** or[**fostering a puppy**](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/nwbb-puppy-foster)**.**

Every November 11, the country pauses to recognize the men and women who have served in uniform. For many Veterans, the words "thank you for your service" arrive kindly but briefly, and then the day passes while the challenges they carry remain.

Veterans Day 2026 offers a chance to do more than acknowledge that service, and organizations like Northwest Battle Buddies (NWBB) make that possible. NWBB provides professionally trained PTSD service dogs to Veterans [at no cost](https://blog.northwestbattlebuddies.org/blog/how-much-ptsd-service-dog-cost), helping them regain their freedom and independence.

In this article, we’ll cover the different ways that you can help support our American Heroes on this holiday and partner with NWBB.

## **What Holiday Is November 11? Veterans Day History Explained**

Veterans Day 2026 falls on Wednesday, November 11. It's a federal holiday observed on the same date every year, which means federal offices, banks, and post offices close while communities across the country mark the day with ceremonies and moments of reflection.

The date isn't arbitrary. November 11 marks the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I, which took effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. The holiday was known as Armistice Day until 1954, when Congress renamed it Veterans Day to honor those who served in all wars. It's often confused with Memorial Day, but the two are distinct. Memorial Day remembers those who died in service, while Veterans Day honors all who have served, both living and deceased.

## **Beyond "Thank You for Your Service"**

Gratitude is a great starting point, but there’s more we can do for Veterans than saying “thank you.” For [a Veteran living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder](https://blog.northwestbattlebuddies.org/blog/understanding-ptsd-how-it-affects-our-veterans) (PTSD), the hardest battles often begin after they return home. Honoring that reality means turning appreciation into support that lasts.

That's where NWBB comes in. Qualifying Veterans are paired with service dogs through an intensive[training program](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/nwbb-service-dogs), and NWBB has matched more than 315 Veteran teams to date. These dogs perform[specific, trained tasks](https://blog.northwestbattlebuddies.org/blog/ptsd-service-dog-tasks) to mitigate PTSD symptoms:

- Drawing on a dog's sense of smell, NWBB trains them to detect the chemical changes that precede a night terror and wake their handler before an episode escalates.
- During a flashback or anxiety attack, a dog can nudge, paw, or lick to bring the Veteran back to the present, or apply deep pressure therapy by leaning into them until the moment passes.
- In public, a service dog can[create a physical buffer in a crowd](https://blog.northwestbattlebuddies.org/blog/service-dogs-social-connection-veterans), easing the hypervigilance and anxiety that keep many Veterans from places they would otherwise avoid, from grocery stores to airports.

The impact is measurable. In a[2025 peer-reviewed study](https://blog.northwestbattlebuddies.org/blog/clinical-study-service-dogs-veterans-ptsd), Veterans paired with service dogs reported fewer PTSD symptoms, improved sleep, and greater independence.

## **Support That Reaches Veterans All Year**

The most direct way to honor a Veteran through NWBB is to help fund the mission that pairs them with a service dog. There are several ways to give, and each one moves a Veteran closer to their canine Battle Buddy:

- [**Make a one-time donation**](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/take-action/donate)**:** Your gift goes straight toward training and placement.
- [**Give monthly through Operation Never Quit (ONQ)**](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/onq)**:** Turn a single gift into steady support that funds the mission the way it unfolds, across months of training rather than a single moment.
- [**Sponsor a puppy with Pledge-A-Pup**](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/pledge-a-pup)**:** Back a specific puppy on its path to becoming a service dog and follow the journey from the beginning.
- [**Set up a custom donation page**](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/take-action/custom-donations)**:** Mark a birthday, an event, or a loved one's memory by rallying your own community around the cause.
- [**Contribute through the wishlist**](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/take-action/wishlist)**:** Provide the everyday supplies that keep the program running.

## **Give Your Time, Your Voice, and Your Home**

Not every form of support is financial. NWBB's mission depends just as much on people willing to give their time, their voice, and even their home:

- [**Foster a puppy**](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/nwbb-puppy-foster)**:** Before a dog can steady a Veteran, it needs a loving foundation. Foster families raise a future service dog in their home through roughly its first year of life, socializing the puppy into everyday activities and keeping it safe and healthy until it enters formal training. Fosters cover the cost of food and basic supplies, pass a background check, and need to live in Washington, Idaho, or Oregon. [It starts with a short application](https://blog.northwestbattlebuddies.org/blog/how-do-i-become-a-puppy-foster) and a follow-up from NWBB's foster coordinator.
- [**Become a sponsor**](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/take-action/become-a-sponsor)**:** Businesses and organizations can partner with NWBB to provide the resources that carry the mission forward. These collaborations help fund the training and placement of service dogs through corporate giving and long-term partnerships, connecting a company to a cause its team and community can stand behind.
- [**Request a speaker**](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/take-action/request-a-speaker)**:** Planning an event, class, or company gathering? NWBB can send a speaker to share the organization's story firsthand, adding a purpose-driven element that raises awareness and introduces new supporters to the mission.
- [**Sign up for emails**](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/enlist-in-email-updates)**:** Staying informed is its own kind of support. Subscribers follow service dog graduations, Veteran pairings, upcoming events, and new ways to get involved, making it easy to pass the mission along to others who might want to help.

## **Make This Veterans Day Count**

This November 11 holiday, "thank you for your service" is still worth saying. It simply means more when it comes with action. Whether you give once, give monthly, foster a puppy, or share NWBB's mission with someone who cares, you help provide the freedom and independence that a Veteran deserves.

Honor our American Heroes this Veterans Day 2026 by[**joining Operation Never Quit**](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/onq),[**fostering a puppy**](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/nwbb-puppy-foster), or[**making a donation**](https://northwestbattlebuddies.org/take-action/donate) to Northwest Battle Buddies. Every gift, every foster home, and every shared story turns a single day of remembrance into an ongoing commitment.
