PTSD Awareness Day: 7 Meaningful Ways to Support Veterans on June 27th

Written by Northwest Battle Buddies | Jun 2, 2025 12:58:35 PM

PTSD Awareness Day, celebrated annually on June 27th, provides an important opportunity to acknowledge the invisible wounds carried by many of our nation's heroes. At Northwest Battle Buddies, we're dedicated to empowering Veterans with PTSD by providing professionally trained PTSD service dogs that help them regain independence and joy in their lives.

As this significant day approaches, we invite you to join us in making a difference in the lives of our American Heroes.

7 Ways to Honor Veterans on PTSD Awareness Day

1. Educate Yourself About the Impact of PTSD on Veterans

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects approximately 7% of Veterans, and can manifest as hypervigilance, nightmares, isolation, and difficulty reintegrating into civilian life. Taking time to educate yourself about PTSD symptoms and challenges is the first step in providing meaningful support.

Here’s where you can learn more about PTSD and what you can do to help:

  1. Visit the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to learn about PTSD symptoms, treatment options, and coping strategies.
  2. Read about resources for friends and family members of Veterans with PTSD at The National Center for PTSD.
  3. Utilize The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)’s mental healthcare lookup service.
  4. Listen to these podcasts about Veterans with PTSD, where you’ll hear first hand accounts of life with PTSD, recovery, and more.

2. Join Our Monthly Giving Program (Operation Never Quit)

One of the most impactful ways to support Veterans with PTSD is through consistent giving. Our monthly giving program – called Operation Never Quit (ONQ) – allows you to provide sustainable support that helps us plan and expand our services to more American Heroes in need. Even small monthly contributions make a tremendous difference in our ability to train and place service dogs with Veterans struggling with PTSD.

3. Sponsor a Foster Puppy or Service Dog in Training

Through our Pledge-a-Pup program, you can directly support the fostering and training of PTSD service dogs. Your monthly pledge follows a specific dog through their fostering and training journey until they're matched with a Veteran. You'll receive exclusive updates about the dog's progress, creating a personal connection to our mission while making a tangible difference in a Veteran's life.

4. Host a Fundraiser for NWBB in Your Community

Community fundraisers are powerful ways to raise both awareness and resources for Veterans with PTSD. Whether it's a neighborhood barbecue, a workplace challenge, or a sponsored athletic event, your creativity can translate into life-changing support through Northwest Battle Buddies.

We make it easy to help: we’ll create a custom donation webpage for your NWBB fundraiser, free of charge. We’ll also manage donations and donor communication, send thank you messages on your behalf, handle transactions, and provide you with a list of your donors and total raised amount. You can even request a speaker to make your event that much more impactful for attendees. Every dollar raised helps another American Hero receive the PTSD service dog they need!

5. Learn How to Support Veterans in Your Personal Life

Here are several impactful ways to help Veterans with PTSD you know personally:

  • Create a calm, predictable environment when spending time together
  • Ask how you can help rather than assuming what they need
  • Be patient and avoid pressuring them to talk about traumatic experiences
  • Respect their triggers and boundaries
  • Listen without judgment when they choose to share
  • Encourage them to seek professional help when needed
  • Help them apply for a PTSD service dog

6. Spread Awareness Through Social Media

On PTSD Awareness Day, help break the stigma by sharing information about PTSD and how service dogs can transform Veterans' lives. You can share our Instagram posts, Facebook statuses, or YouTube videos — or create your own content highlighting the challenges our American Heroes face and the solutions available.

You can also tag Northwest Battle Buddies on Instagram and use hashtags like #PTSDAwarenessDay, #ServiceDogsSaveLives, and #SupportOurVeterans to extend your reach.

7. Donate Items on Our Amazon Wishlist

Another practical way to support Veterans this PTSD Awareness Day is through our Amazon Wishlist. This convenient option allows you to directly purchase essential items our service dogs in training need on a daily basis. When you select an item, it ships straight to our facility, ensuring your contribution immediately helps our mission.

Our Wishlist includes critical supplies like dog food, comfortable beds, durable training crates, engaging toys, and specialized training equipment. These items are crucial as we prepare our dogs to become life-changing companions for Veterans with PTSD.

A Battle No Veteran Should Face Alone

At Northwest Battle Buddies, we believe that no Veteran should have to battle PTSD alone. Our professionally trained PTSD service dogs provide companionship, security, and the unconditional love that helps our American Heroes reclaim their lives from trauma. This PTSD Awareness Day, we invite you to stand with us in supporting these brave people who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.

By taking action through one or more of these supportive measures, you become part of the solution for Veterans struggling with PTSD. Together, we can ensure that every Veteran has access to the life-changing support of a battle buddy who never quits.
